Timberwolves @ Kings
Golden 1 Center, Sacramento, CA
Minnesota Timberwolves What To Watch:
On Thursday, the Minnesota Timberwolves will assist the Sacramento Kings in the 2024–25 season opener, bringing their new look from Southern California to Northern California.
On the momentous night for the James family, the Timberwolves lost 110-103 to the Los Angeles Lakers, despite newcomers Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo scoring a combined 26 points in their Timberwolves debut.
The Timberwolves struggled offensively against a club they defeated three times last season, scoring an average of 117.7 points in those games, after the former Knicks combined to shoot only 8-for-21 overall and 3-for-11 from 3-point range.
The poor performance, according to Randle, was fairly expected.
The Timberwolves, who lost two of three games to the Kings last season, had trouble on defense and were headed by Karl-Anthony Towns at the time. Sacramento's two victories came after scoring 124 points each.
In their lone trip to Sacramento in the 2023–24 season, the Timberwolves did, however, win 110–98 on December 23 thanks to 34 points from Anthony Edwards and 21 points and 17 rebounds from Rudy Gobert.
Sacramento Kings What To Watch:
With DeMar DeRozan expected to make his Sacramento debut, the Sacramento Kings will also have a new appearance this time around.
DeRozan, who finished second to Stephen Curry in last year's NBA Clutch Player of the Year voting, joins De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis on what may be one of the league's most formidable offensive units.
Despite shooting his lowest percentage (46.5 percent) since 2018–19, Fox averaged a career-high 26.6 points last season and has already experienced the benefits of having a high-scoring teammate.
Over the last two seasons, the Kings and Timberwolves have switched places in the Western Conference standings. The Timberwolves moved up to third place last season, leaving the Kings ten games behind, one year after Sacramento finished third in the Western Conference after winning six more games than Minnesota.
In addition to Edwards and DeRozan facing off, the game will have a showdown between two of the league's best double-double machines, Gobert of Minnesota and Sabonis of Sacramento.
Last season, Gobert finished sixth with 54 double-doubles in 76 games, while Domantas Sabonis led the NBA with 77 in 82 games. In their head-to-head matches, Sabonis averaged 17.3 points and 12.0 rebounds, while Gobert averaged 16.3 points and 14.7 rebounds, making both players 3-for-3 in double-doubles.
Both Domantas Sabonis and Gobert have produced double-doubles in each of their seven meetings since Sabonis joined the Kings from the Indiana Pacers in 2022.
Rudy Gobert's 13-point, 14-rebound performance in Los Angeles on Tuesday put him ahead of the competition this year.
