Sacramento Kings vs Phoenix Suns What To Watch:
When the Phoenix Suns play the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, they hope to extend their winning streak to eight games, but they would rather avoid another thrilling conclusion.
With eight tenths of a second left on Friday night, Jusuf Nurkic sank a game-winning free throw to help Phoenix defeat the host Dallas Mavericks 114-113.
It handed the Pacific Division leaders, the Suns, their third straight victory by three points or less, in addition to their seventh in a row. This season, Phoenix has won eight games by a combined 37-point margin.
Phoenix has also used its close-game skills at home. The Suns had a 3-0 homestand before traveling to Dallas, defeating the Miami Heat by three, the Portland Trail Blazers by six, and the Philadelphia 76ers by two.
With a team-best plus-21, Nurkic has been the Suns' most effective fourth-quarter player on a squad that will be missing Kevin Durant for approximately two weeks due to a left calf strain and Devin Booker. He trails Royce O'Neale 18–17 for the team lead in rebounds, but he leads the team in offensive rebounds (six) and fourth-quarter field goal percentage (75.0).
On Sunday, he will face Kings star Domantas Sabonis, who scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in Friday's 107-98 home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, recording his eighth consecutive double-double.
When the Kings lost three of five games in an unusual five-game season series against the Suns last year, Sabonis recorded three straight triple-doubles, missing a fourth straight by one assist. The triple-doubles occurred in January (21 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists) and February (35 points, 18 rebounds, 12 assists) during defeats to Phoenix.
The big guy helped the Kings' 3-point shooting, which was one of their main issues on Friday. The Kings have made 33.3 percent or less from long range for the fifth time in the previous six games, missing 23 of their 26 attempts (11.5 percent).
Sabonis had a 0–2 record. Sacramento starting were 0-for-13, including Keegan Murray's six consecutive misses, with the exception of De'Aaron Fox (2-for-5).
Mike Brown, the coach of the Kings, was unfazed by his team's early-season struggle and said he was confident his team would bounce back against the Suns.
The Kings' 3-point field goal percentage for this season is 30.7 percent, which puts them close to the bottom of the NBA rankings. The Suns have been among the best at 38.3 percent, with Durant making 42.9 and O'Neale making 52.6.
