Philadelphia 76ers What To Watch:
With their star center Joel Embiid out, the Philadelphia 76ers will attempt to avoid a 0–3 start as they travel to Indianapolis for a Sunday matinee against the Indiana Pacers.
Philadelphia lost to the Toronto Raptors 115-107 on the road Friday, their second game of the 2024–25 season. The Sixers lost to the Milwaukee Bucks 124-109 at home on Wednesday, ending the season.
Reports that the NBA was looking into Embiid's absence from the starting lineup overshadowed the outcome.
Embiid, who did not participate in the team's intrasquad scrimmages or preseason games, will miss this week's games due to maintenance on his left knee, the Sixers revealed on Tuesday. Due to injuries, the 2022–2023 NBA MVP only participated in 39 games during the previous season.
Tyrese Maxey and Kelly Oubre, two perimeter players, have led the Sixers' offense in the first two games after Embiid was benched. Despite shooting a pitiful 2 of 12 from 3-point range, Maxey finished with 24 points while Oubre scored 28 points in Friday's defeat.
To start the season, Philadelphia is shooting 17 of 60 (28.3%) from beyond the arc.
One of the biggest challenges in this early part of the season, according to Sixers coach Nick Nurse, is figuring out which combinations to play together. He pointed out that the rotations were being disrupted by veteran center Andre Drummond, who started in Embiid's place but was only able to play 22 minutes because of foul problems. In two games, Drummond has racked up ten fouls.
Indiana Pacers What To Watch:
In the Pacers' home opening, Indiana aims to prolong Philadelphia's early problems. After losing badly to the New York Knicks 123-98 on Friday, they are hoping to bounce back from their own poor performance in the first week of the season.
In his first game since March, Bennedict Mathurin scored 19 points and pulled down six rebounds off the bench as Indiana defeated Detroit 115-109 on Wednesday. Due to a shoulder injury, Mathurin missed the last month of the regular season as well as Indiana's run to the Eastern Conference finals.
With a team-high 20 points on 8 of 13 shots from the field, Mathurin was a bright spot in Friday's defeat. Tyrese Haliburton, last season's breakout All-NBA standout, shot 0-of-8 from the field, including 0-for-7 from 3-point range, and failed to score.
A startling 3 of 30 from beyond the arc was made by the Pacers. Mathurin (2 of 5) and Jarace Walker (1 of 4) off the bench were Indiana's only deep efforts.
After leading the NBA in assists the previous season, Haliburton has only contributed nine through the first two games of this season.
