Indiana Pacers What To Watch:

In an attempt to win the team's first NBA title in over 50 years, the New York Knicks went all out after losing to the Indiana Pacers seven games in the Eastern Conference semifinals last spring.

The Knicks, who will try to get back on track Friday when they visit the Pacers in a battle of the longstanding rivals, had a dismal start to the season.

For both sides, it will be their second game of the season. Tuesday night, the visiting Knicks lost 132-109 to the Boston Celtics, falling down for the last forty-five minutes or more. The Pacers defeated the host Detroit Pistons 115-109 on Wednesday night after rallying from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

On opening night, the retooled Knicks faced a formidable opponent in the defending NBA champion Celtics, who defeated the Dallas Mavericks in five games after sweeping the Pacers to win the championship the previous year.

However, the team-wide defensive problems for the Knicks, whose 108.2 points per game allowed previous season were the fewest in the Eastern Conference, plus the offensive woes of rookies Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns made the blowout loss more disheartening.

After missing his first five shots, Bridges, who the Knicks acquired from the Brooklyn Nets in late June, finished with 16 points and only made two of seven 3-point attempts. In the preseason, Bridges was 2-of-19 from beyond the arc.

Towns finished with 12 points in less than 24 minutes, the first time he's scored 12 points or less in less than 24 minutes in a regular-season game since Nov. 28, 2022, when he departed early due to a non-contact leg injury. Towns was acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a three-team deal on October 2.

Additionally, the Knicks let the Celtics shoot a scorching 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from three-point range. Despite missing its last 13 3-pointers, Boston tied the NBA record for the most 3-pointers made in a game.

Indiana Pacers What To Watch:

On Wednesday, the Pacers' defense was strong enough to offset their poor 3-point shooting. Indiana was only 9-of-31 from long range, but their overall shooting percentage was 50.6 percent (42-of-83).

The Pistons' hopes were all but dashed when franchise player Tyrese Haliburton made his final 3-point try with 20 seconds remaining, extending the Pacers' lead to 113-107. Haliburton was 1-of-9 from outside the arc.

In the fourth quarter, when the Pistons were 1-of-8 from 3-point range and missed three possible game-winning 3-pointers during a more than four-minute run without a score, the Pacers held Detroit to 43.2 percent shooting (38-of-88), including 25 percent (5-of-20).

The Pacers announced on Thursday that James Wiseman, their new center, tore his left Achilles tendon during the game against Detroit. Wiseman and the organization "are working together to evaluate treatment options." In July, Indiana signed the 2020 draft's second overall pick as a free agent.
