Jazz @ Mavericks
American Airlines Center, Dallas, TX
Utah Jazz What To Watch:
The Utah Jazz will play the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night in their first road trip, looking to win for the first time this season.
A day after his team's 127-86 loss to the Golden State Warriors at home, Jazz coach Will Hardy called for a lengthy film review session on Saturday. ChampsorChumps.com reports that the 41-point thrashing was the second-worst home loss in the team's history. On January 28, 2013, they suffered their worst defeat, falling to the Houston Rockets 125-80.
Instead of practicing on Saturday, Hardy directed his team's focus on the movie to analyze the season's second game. He referred to it as "a mental day" and asked everyone in the squad for feedback on the performance.
According to Hardy, the squad has to focus on playing competitively and urgently as the main lessons learned from the session. He went on to say that playing at half pace will not result in success.
For instance, no Jazz player committed a foul despite Golden State scoring 38 points in the third quarter.
The Jazz's top scorer, Lauri Markkanen, averages 24 points per game. However, the 7-foot forward only managed 13 points and went 4-for-17 against the Warriors.
Dallas Mavericks What To Watch:
The Mavericks defeated the Phoenix Suns 114-102 on the road on Saturday after defeating the San Antonio Spurs in their season opening on Thursday. Dallas came within 68-67 early in the third quarter, but Phoenix never fell behind after the first period.
Jason Kidd, the coach of the Mavericks, claimed that his team committed too many fouls during their defeat, in contrast to the Jazz. The Suns outscored their visitors 28–15 at the line, as Phoenix had 37 attempts at free throws. Kidd told Mavs.com that the Suns had more opportunities to score uncontested points as a result of that fouling.
Its best three players produced for Dallas. Kyrie Irving finished with 22 points and five assists, while Luka Doncic scored a game-high 40 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Klay Thompson, a rookie, scored 19 points and made 5 of 12 3-point attempts. But nobody else managed to score more than seven points.
Doncic, who won the scoring title the previous season, is tied with Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers and Trae Young of Atlanta, who both top the league in scoring at 34 points per game.
