San Antonio Spurs What To Watch:
Last season, Victor Wembanyama easily won NBA Rookie of the Year.
Chet Holmgren, who is his closest rival for that title, spent the previous season leading his team to a playoff series victory and the best Western Conference record.
On Wednesday night in Oklahoma City, Wembanyama's San Antonio Spurs and Holmgren's Oklahoma City Thunder will play each other for the first time this season.
The Thunder defeated the Spurs three out of four games last season.
Wembanyama averaged 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while playing in three of the four games. This includes a crucial performance in late February that helped Wembanyama win the award unanimously: 28 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists.
During those four games last season, Holmgren averaged 14.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists versus the Spurs.
Wembanyama has had some symptoms thus far this season as a result of a hectic offseason that includes competing in the Olympics for France.
He is shooting only 22.2 percent from outside the arc despite averaging 20 points, 12 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.7 blocks in San Antonio's 1-2 start. His 32.5 percent average from the previous season is lower than that.
For the first time since 2016, Holmgren has helped the Thunder start 3-0 with an average of 23.7 points, 13 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 4.0 blocks thus far.
Oklahoma City Thunder What To Watch:
Mark Daigneault, the coach of Oklahoma City, stated that he will not be restricting playing time for Holmgren or the Thunder's other young core members anytime soon, despite the team's second three-game run in four days early in the season.
Oklahoma City's offense is still erratic, but they have won their last three games by 15 points or more.
However, with a defensive rating of just 90.8 points per 100 possessions, the Thunder currently lead the league.
Outside of Holmgren, the Thunder are expected to be limited once more in the frontcourt due to the absence of Kenrich Williams (knee), Jaylin Williams (hamstring), and Isaiah Hartenstein (hand).
Tre Jones sprained his right ankle in the first game, meaning the Spurs will be without him for the third straight game.
