San Antonio Spurs What To Watch:
Despite Victor Wembanyama's Rookie of the Year campaign, the Spurs finished 14th in the Western Conference with a 22-60 record and missed the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year.
In his first season, the highly regarded Frenchman, 20, scored 21.4 points, grabbed 10.6 rebounds, dished out 3.9 assists, and recorded a league-high 3.6 blocks per game.
Wembanyama led San Antonio in scoring in 31 games and led the team in rebounds in 48 during his 71 games as a starter last season. Since 2015–16, the 7-foot-4 center has blocked the most shots in a season with 254 (Hassan Whiteside, 269).
In the offseason, the Spurs signed forward Harrison Barnes and veteran point guard Chris Paul. As shooting guard Devin Vassell heals from a stress fracture in his foot, forwards Julian Champagnie and Jeremy Sochan will join that duo and Wembanyama in the starting lineup.
It is anticipated that Vassell will return in November.
Along with forwards Zach Collins and Sandro Mamukelashvili, center Charles Bassey, and fellow guards Tre Jones, Malaki Branham, Blake Wesley, and rookie Stephon Castle, Keldon Johnson will be in charge of the reserve team.
Gregg Popovich, who is starting his 29th season as the Spurs' manager, leads San Antonio. He holds the NBA record with 1,388 career victories.
Dallas Mavericks What To Watch:
As the Lone Star State rivals begin their season on Thursday in Dallas, it's finally "go time" for the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks, two clubs with different expectations.
While the Spurs is merely attempting to regain respectability during a protracted rebuilding period, the Mavericks are vying for a league championship.
Dallas defeated the Spurs in all four of their matchups en route to winning the Western Conference in 2023–24, going 50–32.
The Mavericks, who signed free agent Klay Thompson in the offseason to solve their 3-point shooting deficit, are once again anticipated to contend for the top slot in the Western Conference, led by guards Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Jason Kidd, the coach of Dallas, has kept the rest of his starting lineup a secret. P.J. Washington will probably start at power forward, and Daniel Gafford or Dereck Lively II will occupy the center position.
Mavs Guards Quentin Grimes, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Jaden Hardy; forwards Naji Marshall and Maxi Kleber; and center Dwight Powell are among the Mavericks' key backups. Due to wrist surgery, guard Dante Exum is anticipated to miss the first three months of the season.
Doncic missed the preseason due to a left calf contusion, but he has been cleared to play on Thursday after participating fully in recent practices.
