Orlando Magic What To Watch:
The Orlando Magic just finished with 47 victories, their highest total since winning 52 games in 2010–11.
After leading the Magic to a higher victory total in each of his first three seasons as coach, Jamahl Mosley is starting his fourth season.
Prior to last year's 47-win finish, Orlando had a 21-51 record in the shortened 2020–21 season, followed by 22 victories in Mosley's rookie year and 34 victories in 2022–23.
The Magic have a dynamic young forward tandem in Franz Wagner, 23, and Paolo Banchero, 21, who was named an All-Star for the first time last season.
The backcourt is another area where Orlando is youthful. Last season, 23-year-old Jalen Suggs averaged 12.6 points and was selected to the NBA's All-Defensive Second Team.
In addition to being the only three Magic players with at least 72 starts, Banchero (22.6 points per game), Wagner (19.7 points), and Suggs finished as the team's top three scorers in the previous campaign.
In the offseason, Orlando fixed a serious flaw. A year earlier, the Magic tied for the eighth-lowest 3-point shooting percentage (35.2 percent) and tied for the fewest 3-pointers made per game (11.0).
Veteran shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a lifetime 36.9 percent 3-point shooter who made 40.6 percent of his 3-point attempts the previous season, was signed by Magic president Jeff Weltman. In 2023, Caldwell-Pope, 31, and Denver also won an NBA championship.
Miami Heat What To Watch:
The Miami Heat are predicted by some to have a poor 2024–25 season, even though they advanced to the NBA Finals two seasons earlier. In its season preview released on Monday, ESPN, for instance, placed Miami 18th out of 30 teams.
This season, which starts on Wednesday against the visiting Orlando Magic, the Heat will try to dispel such drab expectations.
The first meeting between the two Florida rivals took place 35 years ago this season. Miami leads the all-time series 82-61, but Orlando won the inaugural meeting ever in November 1989. Last season, the Heat prevailed in three of four encounters.
Due to its lack of significant summer acquisitions after its first-round Conference playoff exit, Miami might not be seen favorably going into the season.
The Heat selected center Kel'el Ware in the first round, signed reserve guard Alec Burks, and lost forward Caleb Martin to free agency.
Miami did, however, sign veteran forward Kevin Love to a two-year contract and keep star center Bam Adebayo with a three-year agreement.
Erik Spoelstra, a two-time champion, Adebayo, forward Jimmy Butler, and guard Tyler Herro are the Heat's other three standout players.
While Adebayo is likely approaching the prime of his career at age 27, Butler and Herro are looking to bounce back after injury-shortened campaigns.
The other potential starters are Terry Rozier, a seasoned guard, and Love. In addition, Miami will depend on defensive specialist Haywood Highsmith, 3-point shooter Duncan Robinson, and emerging second-year guard Jaime Jaquez Jr.
