Oklahoma City Thunder What To Watch:

Denver and Oklahoma City were headed for a showdown in the Western Conference finals last spring, but neither club advanced past the second round.

Although it was a disappointing conclusion for teams hoping to win a championship, that is now in the past. Now, both teams are concentrating on their 2024–25 seasons, which start Thursday night when the Nuggets play the Thunder.

Last year, Oklahoma City earned the unexpected No. 1 seed in the Western Conference after Denver lost to San Antonio by 23 points in the 81st game, dropping to No. 2. After that, the Thunder defeated eventual West champion Dallas in six games after sweeping New Orleans.

With a few personnel adjustments, both teams are anticipated to contend for the conference's top spot once more.

To provide depth in the frontcourt, Oklahoma City signed center Isaiah Hartenstein as a free agency and traded for guard Alex Caruso. However, Hartenstein suffered a broken bone in his left hand during a preseason game on October 15 and will be out for at least a month.

Chet Holmgren will guard three-time MVP Nikola Jokic on Thursday in Hartenstein's absence. The slack 7-foot-1 power forward is aware that he cannot stand up to the 6-foot-11, 284-pound star on his own.

One of the NBA's youngest and possibly best teams is the Thunder. Last season, Oklahoma City won 57 games and went 3-1 versus Denver, led by guards Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, 26, and Holmgren, 22.

Denver Nuggets What To Watch:

Following last season's second-round loss to Minnesota, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope joined Orlando, and bench players Justin Holiday and Reggie Jackson have also left.

On draft night, Denver selected DaRon Holmes II with the 22nd overall pick from the Phoenix Suns; however, the forward will miss the season due to an Achilles tear. By adding Dario Saric as Jokic's backup, the Nuggets made a change.

The signing of veteran guard Russell Westbrook to a two-year, $6.8 million contract was Denver's most fascinating acquisition. After losing to Jamal Murray in the playoffs last spring, Westbrook, who has long been a rival since his tenure with Oklahoma City, now serves as the team's second unit leader.

Denver lost Caldwell-Pope, but Christian Braun is arguably one of the league's finest new starters. Braun, a rookie on the team that won the 2023 title, will get the first opportunity to start at shooting guard, which might take some of the Nuggets' energy away from the bench.

Denver is hoping that Westbrook will provide the spark instead of Braun, but Murray, who struggled with knee pain during the preseason, may force him to start.

Jokic, who just finished his most recent MVP campaign, is the key to the Nuggets' aspirations of winning the championship. Additionally, he expressed reservations about the team's preseason performance and has become a more outspoken leader.
