New York Knicks vs Philadelphia 76ers What To Watch:
When the Philadelphia 76ers play the struggling New York Knicks on Tuesday, Joel Embiid is scheduled to make his season debut.
The NBA Cup, which consists of six groups of five teams, includes Tuesday's match. The Brooklyn Nets, Orlando Magic, Charlotte Hornets, and the Sixers and Knicks are all in East Group A. Two teams that are off to a sluggish start square off in the group-play competition.
The plan for Philadelphia to feature the dynamic trio of Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, and Embiid had been shelved. Embiid missed the first nine games of the regular season and the whole preseason, first because of left knee pain and then, more recently, because he was suspended for three games for pushing a reporter.
Maxey had a hamstring injury shortly after his comeback, which will keep him out of action for several weeks. George (knee) missed the first five games and has played the last four.
The Sixers are in a bad start to the season because of their availability problems. After blowing a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter against Charlotte on Sunday, they rallied to win 107-105 in overtime and end a five-game losing run.
Embiid played in just 39 games last season due to injuries, but he averaged a career-high 34.7 points and 11.0 rebounds. In addition to averaging career-high assists (5.6) and steals (1.2), he had an outstanding season shooting from the field (52.9 percent), the 3-point arc (38.8 percent), and the foul line (88.3).
Getting revenge on the Knicks, who beat the Sixers in the opening round of the playoffs last season, will be Embiid's first task.
Josh Hart (16.8 points, 12.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists) was everywhere on the court during that six-game series, while Jalen Brunson of New York averaged 35.5 points and 9.0 assists. Maxey scored 29.8 points per game, while Embiid averaged 33.0 points and 10.8 rebounds.
This season has already tested the Knicks' ability to bounce back. Including double-digit losses to the Indiana Pacers and Houston Rockets, New York has lost three of its last four games.
In Sunday's 132-121 loss to Indiana, Brunson (33 points) and rookie Knick Karl-Anthony Towns (30 points) led New York, which was doomed by its own 7-of-25 3-point shooting and the Pacers' 21-of-46 long-range effort.
