Knicks @ Rockets
Toyota Center, Houston, TX
New York Knicks What To Watch:
The New York Knicks acquired Karl-Anthony Towns during training camp, giving them a second outstanding scorer to complement Jalen Brunson, whose breakout offensive performance the previous season propelled the Knicks into the Eastern Conference's top division.
Even though it will take time for their individual abilities to come together, the Knicks, who play the Houston Rockets on Monday to continue their four-game road trip, have already seen hints of what could happen when Towns or Brunson are playing well.
Brunson recorded 36 points and five assists in Friday's 128-98 victory against the Detroit Pistons, two days after Towns combined 44 points and 13 rebounds in a nine-point victory over the Miami Heat on the road.
The Knicks seem to be just getting started offensively. Under coach Tom Thibodeau, they continue to have an unshakeable reputation on defense. The versatile forward OG Anunoby, whose all-around skill against the Pistons complemented Brunson, is at the heart of that defensive power.
Anunoby finished the game with 21 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Anunoby made an instant impression after being traded to the Knicks the previous season. Anunoby's impact on the Knicks during the previous postseason was diminished by injuries. However, now that he is completely settled in, everyone can see how important Anunoby will be going forward.
Houston Rockets What To Watch:
Following a road victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday, the Rockets lost to the Golden State Warriors 127-121 in overtime on Saturday, giving up the majority of a 23-point lead. Inconsistency is still the term for the team. In order to force overtime, host Houston overcame a 31-point deficit against the Warriors, even gaining a one-point lead in the fourth quarter.
The series opener was where the rollercoaster began. Before defeating the Memphis Grizzlies by 20 points, the Rockets lost to the Charlotte Hornets after blowing an 18-point lead. In their 106-101 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on the road on October 28, the Rockets never fell behind, but they had to hang on late in the third quarter after taking a 21-point lead.
The Rockets are a challenging club to predict because of their inconsistent play. Their in-game inconsistency has led to a philosophical dilemma on whether to applaud the Rockets for their tenacity or to write them off for their tendency to squander big leads or fall into huge holes.
