Phoenix Suns vs Utah Jazz What To Watch:
When the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz play their first NBA Cup group play matchup in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, they will both have fresh starts after having rather different seasons.
Phoenix moved from the five-team group at 3-1 to the knockout round in the first-ever NBA Cup, which was then known as the NBA In-Season Tournament, last season. Utah's 2-2 record placed them third in the group.
The Jazz stumbled to a 0-6 start in the first four weeks of this regular season, which is the worst start the team has had since going 0-8 in 2013–14. But after a 111-110 loss at San Antonio on Saturday, Utah enters the NBA Cup having won two of their last three games.
Devin Vassell made a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but Utah had the buffer they needed thanks to a free throw from Collin Sexton with 3.2 seconds remaining. The Jazz improved to 2-1 this season when Sexton scored 20 points or more, and he finished with a team-high 23 points.
On November 4, the team defeated Chicago 135-126, with Sexton scoring 24 points.
After missing the Oct. 29 defeat to Sacramento due to back spasms, Lauri Markkanen returned to the lineup and scored 20 points in his second game. Kyle Filipowski, a rookie forward, scored eight points, dished out six assists, and pulled down five rebounds in a great all-around performance against the Spurs.
In his second NBA game, fellow Utah rookie guard Isaiah Collier, who was filling in for Keyonte George due to a foot ailment, finished with seven points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Phoenix starts group play with just its second loss of the season, while Utah leads the NBA Cup after just its second victory.
The Suns' seven-game winning streak came to an end as they fell 127-118 in overtime to visiting Sacramento. With Kevin Durant out, Devin Booker scored 28 points, Bradley Beal contributed 23, and Tyus Jones scored a season-high 22 to carry the most of the offensive burden.
Durant strained his left calf during Friday's 114-113 victory against Dallas for Phoenix. The 11-time All-NBA forward will be out for at least the next two weeks, the organization confirmed.
In addition to colliding with DeMar DeRozan on Sunday, Beal, who has been battling an elbow strain, had an X-ray of his left knee taken after the game. The X-ray's results were negative.
Jusuf Nurkic left the game due to an ankle injury, which was followed by Beal's incident.
Mason Plumlee, a veteran reserve who has been "very good" for Phoenix this season, scored six points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and gave out six assists after entering the game.
Josh Okogie, a fellow reserve, contributed five rebounds and nine points. Budenholzer still wants the bench to continue to contribute, regardless of Beal or Nurkic's status for Tuesday.
