After a big deal, most teams would go through growing pains, and the Minnesota Timberwolves are no different.

Minnesota begins NBA Cup play on Tuesday night against the host Portland Trail Blazers after suffering a heartbreaking home loss to the Miami Heat on Sunday, ending its three-game winning streak. On Wednesday, the teams will play again in Portland.

The Trail Blazers have dropped their last three games, most notably to the Memphis Grizzlies, who visited on Sunday, 134-89.

After Mike Conley missed a 3-pointer in the final two seconds, Minnesota lost to Miami 95-94 on Sunday. Twenty turnovers were made by the Wolves during the defeat.

Chris Finch, the coach of Minnesota, accepted responsibility for part of the misunderstanding that occurred during the game's last two possessions after the game. Rudy Gobert, the center, said it was a team loss but acknowledged Finch's apologies.

Prior to the season, Minnesota traded Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo, so the occasional bump in the road was to be expected.

The Wolves are concentrating on determining the most effective way to incorporate their newest players after making it to the Western Conference finals the previous season.

Conley, 37, is trying to establish himself this season despite shooting a lackluster 30.7% from 3-point range and 30.7 percent from the overall.

Despite Portland's poor showing against a diminished Memphis team, Minnesota has won their last five games with the team.

The Grizzlies led by as many as 25 points in the second quarter despite playing without guards Ja Morant (hip) and Desmond Bane (oblique).

Dalano Banton and Donovan Clingan both scored 13 points off the bench, but Jerami Grant led the Blazers with 20 points.

Portland committed 23 mistakes and shot 4-of-42 (9.5 percent) from 3-point range to start a four-game homestand.

After recovering from a shoulder injury, Blazers guard Shaedon Sharpe made his first start of the season on Sunday and finished with seven points on three of ten shots.
