Miami Heat What To Watch:
If Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler's traditional appearance in contrast to his typical Media Day antics is a sign that the forward is already set, the East can anticipate seeing a different Heat when they begin their preseason on Tuesday at Spectrum Center against the Charlotte Hornets.
In the previous two seasons, Miami qualified for the playoffs through the play-in, and one of those seasons ended in a run to the NBA Finals. Butler led the team to a deeper stretch for the second time, but both times the Heat were soaked.
The Heat's 46-36 record from the previous season suggested that they would have another strong postseason run, but Butler's MCL sprain would have prevented him from playing.
Charlotte Hornets What To Watch:
With Brandon Miller among them, the Hornets appeared to be a dynamic team. However, they finished 13th in the East with a 21-61 record, making it another turbulent season. Ironically, the Heat defeated them despite having a 3-2 lead in 2016, the year they last qualified for the playoffs.
Aside from aiming for the championship, the Hornets must first compete to be a team that can qualify for the playoffs, which still means they need to win at least 40 games and get other results in order to have a shot. Reaching that goal will be the main focus of this season.
In their preseason opener against the New York Knicks, they performed admirably, losing 111-109 in spite of LaMelo Ball's 18-point performance.
