Memphis Grizzlies What To Watch:
In Wednesday's season opening, Memphis guard Ja Morant demonstrated that the excitement around his return to the Grizzlies was well-founded.
With 22 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds in a 126-124 victory over the Utah Jazz, Morant made it difficult to tell he had missed 73 games due to suspension and injuries previous season.
However, forward Santi Aldama's performance was just as impressive. Aldama, who started in place of Jaren Jackson Jr. due to a hamstring injury, scored 27 points, one point short of his career high, and pulled down five rebounds to assist Morant in leading the Grizzlies' well-rounded offensive effort. The team will continue to play on the road on Friday against the Houston Rockets.
Aldama started 35 games for the injury-plagued Grizzlies last season, averaging 10.7 points and 5.8 rebounds. Because of Morant's tendency to go downhill with the ball in an attempt to execute spectacular rim attacks, Memphis can benefit from his perimeter shooting. Aldama demonstrated the potential power of the duo by making five 3-pointers against the Jazz.
All 11 players in Jenkins' 11-man rotation at Utah recorded double figures in minutes. The Grizzlies' depth is a noteworthy development, especially considering that Morant can be a one-man show and that any assistance with his offensive workload might be very helpful.
Houston Rockets What To Watch:
The Rockets began the season by showcasing their depth, but Wednesday's 110-105 home loss to the Charlotte Hornets didn't exactly live up to that promise. Only one backup, Amen Thompson, scored in double figures as Houston gave up an 18-point advantage in the first half of the game.
The four other reserves that played scored 15 points on 7-for-16 shooting, while Thompson finished with 13 points and four rebounds in 21 minutes. The only backup to post a positive plus/minus at plus-4 was Cam Whitmore.
