Houston Rockets What To Watch:
Jalen Green scored 11 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, sparking the Rockets' comeback, and drew the back of the rim on a last 3-pointer to tie the game in the final seconds. Fred VanVleet had 18 points, Brooks had 16, Jock Landale had 13, and Cam Whitmore had 10. Houston was playing the night after defeating Memphis at home.
The Spurs and Rockets will also play on November 6 in Houston. The Rockets will host the teams' final regular-season encounter on February 26.
San Antonio Spurs What To Watch:
The rivalry between the Spurs' and Rockets' young players is palpable, and it will be fueled when the teams face again on Monday, with San Antonio hosting Houston for the second time in three nights.
The clubs have traditionally had a rivalry despite being separated by only 193 miles, but most of the history has been lost on the current players, especially as neither team has made the playoffs since the 2019-20 season. Houston almost missed the playoffs last year, but the Spurs have been out of the playoffs for five years in a row.
There are signs that the rivalry has been reignited as both teams compete for respectability. San Antonio guard Jeremy Sochan fueled the fire by telling a reporter "(expletive) Houston!" during a press conference prior to Saturday's game.
The Spurs' 109-106 victory against Houston on Saturday demonstrated the increase in intensity when San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama and the Rockets' Dillon Brooks fought for a loose ball in the third quarter and scuffled as the teams crowded around for a grab and hold session when neither let go.
Wembanyama scored 29 points, and youngster Stephon Castle made a crucial free throw with 7.2 seconds remaining to help the Spurs hold on Saturday. San Antonio opened open a close game by outscoring the Rockets 20-3 in the final 9 1/2 minutes of the second quarter, taking a 21-point lead into halftime.
The Spurs led by 18 entering into the fourth quarter, but they had to withstand a furious Houston comeback that reduced the lead to two points after Brooks' layup with 1:24 to play, setting up the dramatic conclusion.
