The return of J.B. Bickerstaff to Cleveland occurs early in the NBA schedule.

On Friday night, the coach of the Detroit Pistons will attempt to come up with strategies to beat his old team. After the previous season, after defeating Orlando in a first-round playoff series, the Cavaliers fired Bickerstaff.

After dismissing Monty Williams, who was only with the team for one season, Trajan Langdon, the new Pistons president of basketball operations, selected Bickerstaff to coach his rebuilding squad.

The Pistons, who just finished the worst season in the team's history, battled hard against Indiana before losing 115-109 on Wednesday. Detroit was outscored 33-19 in the fourth quarter after leading by double digits in the first half.

With 28 points and eight assists, Cade Cunningham, the team's star, took the lead. Jaden Ivey, a backcourt companion, contributed 17 points.

Three offseason-acquired veterans also contributed to the Pistons' double-digit output. Tobias Harris contributed 13 points, while Tim Hardaway Jr. and Malik Beasley each contributed 14 points.

After suffering a 68-loss campaign, the club appeared considerably more competitive overall.

Over the past nine encounters, the Cavaliers have dominated the Pistons in recent seasons. Cleveland defeated Toronto 136-106 to start the new season. The team's top scorer, Evan Mobley, finished with 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks. For a season opening, the point total was a franchise high.

This season, the goal is to run more offense via their power forward, according to new head coach Kenny Atkinson.

After serving as an assistant at Golden State, Atkinson was brought on as Bickerstaff's replacement.
