Dallas Mavericks vs Denver Nuggets What To Watch:
Whether the bench was capable of holding the club in games or extending leads was Denver's biggest uncertainty going into the season.
The Nuggets' reserves have performed admirably in recent games, but the Dallas Mavericks haven't. Before Sunday night's game in Denver, coach Jason Kidd expressed dissatisfaction with his bench following Friday's last-second loss to the Suns.
The bench scored just nine points on Friday night, and only two Dallas backups, Spencer Dinwiddie (28), and Dwight Powell (26), saw any meaningful action. Kidd has been forced to play Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic for more than 40 minutes as a result.
Doncic and Irving are the team's top two scorers, averaging 37.2 and 35.7 minutes, respectively. The rotation has been hampered by injuries, as Dereck Lively II (shoulder), Maxi Kleber (hamstring), and P.J. Washington (knee) were all out against the Suns.
Kidd is worried about his team's sluggish starts in addition to the injuries and bench. At halftime on Friday night, the Mavericks were behind 13 points, but they came back to level the score late.
Despite having a number of sluggish starts, Denver has come back to win three of those games. Despite a 0–2 start, the Nuggets have won six of the previous seven games and four in a row thanks to excellent play from their reserves.
In Friday night's 135-122 victory over the Heat, Russell Westbrook recorded 10 assists, Hunter Tyson and Julian Strawther played strong minutes, and the bench didn't provide many points. Due to a concussion, Westbrook started the previous three games; however, Jamal Murray returned on Friday to score a season-high 28 points.
Aaron Gordon, Denver's primary power forward, has been sidelined for many weeks due to a right calf strain, but Peyton Watson has performed admirably in his place. Having Nikola Jokic in the starting lineup also helps. Due to his performance in the first nine games, the three-time MVP is arguing for a fourth.
Jokic had his seventh triple-double of the season on Friday night. He started Saturday fifth in scoring (28.9 points per game), first in rebounds (13.2), and first in assists (11.3). Every opponent's defense revolves on him, and when he is double-teamed, he finds an open teammate.
