Cleveland Cavaliers What To Watch:
The Cleveland Cavaliers will have to play the second night of a back-to-back on the road against the Washington Wizards on Saturday if they want to maintain their undefeated start.
In Friday's 113-101 victory over the Detroit Pistons at home, Dean Wade and Donovan Mitchell each scored 19 points, putting six Cleveland players in double figures. Evan Mobley scored 16 points against Detroit after scoring 25 points in the Cavaliers' 136-106 victory against Toronto on Wednesday, while Jarrett Allen finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
In their debut season under coach Kenny Atkinson, the Cavaliers are 2-0 so far. J.B. Bickerstaff, who was on the Detroit sideline for the game on Friday, was replaced by the former Brooklyn Nets manager.
Atkinson most recently served as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors, which included the team that won the NBA title in 2021–2022. He offers offensive experience to a Cleveland club that finished among the league's top defense teams the previous two seasons but occasionally had trouble scoring.
During the first two games under Atkinson, the Cleveland offense was supported by balanced shooting and ball movement. Against Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors, the Cleveland Cavaliers combined for 28 and 29 assists, respectively.
On Friday, eight Cleveland players contributed at least two assists, with Mitchell dishing out five and Darius Garland dishing out six. Ty Jerome contributed four assists and 13 points off the bench.
Washington Wizards What To Watch:
Following a franchise-worst 15-67 record in 2023–24, Washington lost 122–102 to the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics on Thursday to begin the 2024–25 season.
Kyle Kuzma was the only other starter for Washington to score in double figures, scoring 12 points, while Jordan Poole scored 26 points. In his Wizards debut, Jonas Valanciunas ended with 18 points and five rebounds off the bench.
A 20-year-old second-year player named Bilal Coulibaly and two 19-year-old rookies, Carlton Carrington and Alexandre Sarr, were in the starting lineup versus Boston, which was indicative of a season that Washington would probably be rebuilding.
In his NBA debut, Carrington finished with three points, three rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Sarr finished with two blocks, five rebounds, and two points.
Kyshawn George, a 20-year-old rookie, finished the game with four points, three rebounds, and two assists.
