Charlotte Hornets What To Watch:

Although most power rankings have the Charlotte Hornets in the bottom five at the start of the season, there has been some encouraging news on the sidelines.

Despite his struggles with persistent ankle injuries, point guard LaMelo Ball has unmistakable star potential. Like Ball, center Mark Williams is starting his age-23 season and has also battled injuries, but he has potential.

Brandon Miller, a forward in his second year, will turn 22 next month. Last year, he placed third in the Rookie of the Year voting and has demonstrated the drive to advance his extraordinary two-way ability.

Houston Rockets What To Watch:

The Houston Rockets used the devastating loss of rising star center Alperen Sengun, who missed the last 18 games due to knee and ankle problems, as a catalyst for an unexpected run for a postseason berth and a change in offensive strategy.

Since Sengun was out, the Rockets relied heavily on guard Jalen Green to accelerate the game. Green averaged 30.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists to help Houston pull off an 11-game winning run in March, with Sengun sitting out the final nine games.

The Rockets will play the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday to begin the 2024–25 season, determined to maintain the accelerated pace they set late in the previous campaign.

After Sengun agreed to a five-year, $185 million contract on Monday, just hours after Green signed a three-year, $105.3 million agreement, Houston will do so with both players locked to extensions beyond their rookie contracts.

Fits and spurts will result from integrating Sengun, a talented post player with a lack of athleticism, into their uptempo system. This preseason's transition turnovers demonstrated that.

The Rockets are on the verge of the next big thing after battling their way to a.500 finish and ending a run of three straight losing seasons.

In addition to Jabari Smith Jr., Amen Thompson, and Cam Whitmore, their roster is full of young talent, and four veterans—Fred VanVleet, Dillon Brooks, Jeff Green, and Steven Adams—are ready to provide a solid base for the framework built around Green and Sengun.

The first step toward the future was the preseason. The regular season is a distinct competition.
