Brooklyn Nets What To Watch:

After losing to the Atlanta Hawks 120-116 on the road in Jordi Fernandez's first game as coach, the Nets are making an effort to avoid consecutive 0-2 starts for the first time in their NBA history.

After seeing Cam Thomas score 36 points to begin a season in which the fourth-year guard is predicted to be the team's leading scorer, Fernandez became the tenth coach since the Nets relocated to Brooklyn.

When the Nets almost overcame a 10-point hole in the last six or more minutes of the fourth quarter, Thomas scored 20 points. With roughly eight minutes left, Nic Claxton was sent off for a flagrant-two foul, which set up Thomas' late burst.

Brooklyn committed 32 fouls, including Claxton's hard foul, which led to 46 trips to the free-throw line for the Hawks. It was Brooklyn's most number of fouls since they committed 34 in a five-point defeat to Phoenix on January 19, 2023.

In addition, Brooklyn wants to cut down on turnovers from the start of the season. Dennis Schroder and Ben Simmons, who played 24 minutes in his first game after back surgery in March, combined for 11 of the Nets' 19 turnovers after they committed at least 15 in 28 games the previous season.

Orlando Magic What To Watch:

The Orlando Magic's season opener went incredibly well, particularly in the third quarter, following the team's most successful season in well over ten years.

Now, when the Magic play the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night, they will try to begin 2-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time in more than 30 years.

For the first time since the 1992–93 and 1993–94 seasons, which were the first two seasons of Shaquille O'Neal's Hall of Fame career, the Magic try to begin back-to-back seasons with back-to-back victories.

The Magic won 47 games last season, their best since finishing 52-30 in 2010–11, two seasons after losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. They won their first two games and never fell below.500 during that run.

After defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 7 of the first round of the NBA last spring, the Magic, led by Paolo Banchero and an up-and-coming core, are the favorites in the Southeast Division. After Orlando started the third quarter with a 12-0 run, Banchero, whose scoring average increased from 20 points to 22.6 in his second season, scored 33 points in Wednesday's 116-97 victory over the host Miami Heat.

After a 25-minute halftime ceremony, Banchero scored 12 points when the Magic shot 66.7 percent (14 of 21) from the field and outscored the Heat 39-18 in the third to increase their lead from four points at halfway to 25 points.
