Brooklyn Nets What To Watch:

Since leaving New Jersey, the Nets, led by first-year coach Jordi Fernandez, have some of the lowest expectations going into their 13th season in Brooklyn.

The Nets went 32-50 last season and collapsed in the final three months of the season, going 17-35, after five consecutive postseason berths during which they acquired Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant before both players asked for trades.

The fact that Brooklyn traded Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks for five first-round picks contributes to their lesser expectations. The Nets made few deals or used free agency to improve the squad.

Cam Thomas, a fourth-year guard, is expected to be the Nets' main offensive threat. Last season, when he appeared in 66 games with 51 starts, the former first-round pick increased his scoring average from 10.6 points per game in 2022–2023 to 22.5 points per game.

Brooklyn also hopes that Ben Simmons will be able to maintain his health.

Simmons has only played in 57 games during his more than two years with Brooklyn, who purchased the guard from the Philadelphia 76ers in February 2022 due to back issues. Last season, Simmons averaged 6.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 5.7 assists in 23.9 minutes while playing in just 15 games.

Center Nic Claxton, who practiced Monday for the first time since missing time due to hamstring tightness, is expected to continue to progress for the Nets.

Atlanta Hawks What To Watch:

Regardless of how effective star guard Trae Young is, the Atlanta Hawks' defense has been steadily declining since their unexpected run to the Eastern Conference finals in the 2020–21 campaign.

Young and the Hawks finished 36-46 last season and lost to the Chicago Bulls in a play-in tournament game. They were tied for 28th in scoring defense, giving up 120.5 points per game.

In Quin Snyder's second full season as head coach, Atlanta is hoping for a major improvement in defense, starting Wednesday against the visiting Brooklyn Nets.

After dropping to 21st the next season, Atlanta's scoring defense plummeted to a tie for 25th in 2022–2023 before plummeting once again the previous season.

Young only played four games after February 23 due to a damaged ligament in his left pinkie, after averaging 25.7 points in 2023–24.

In order to strengthen their defense, the Hawks traded guard Dyson Daniels and forward Larry Nance Jr. to the New Orleans Pelicans in the offseason.

Daniels is supposed to follow an opponent's top scorer while Nance assists with rebounds. During the preseason, Daniels performed admirably against All-Stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Tyrese Haliburton, and Tyrese Maxey.

Together with forwards Jalen Johnson, De'Andre Hunter, and top overall choice Zaccharie Risacher, Daniels and Nance will form a youthful core. The two most prominent returning veterans are Capela and guard Bogdan Bogdanovic.
